12-15 May 2025, Savannah, USA
See Chronos at WSTS 2025. We are proud to be sponsoring and speaking at the ATIS Workshop on Synchronisation and Timing Systems (WSTS). The theme for this year’s conference is Time and Sync: Catalysts for Modern Innovation.
On Thursday 5 May at 1.45pm Chris Farrow will present “From Cyber Time to Cyber Crime: TETRA:BURST as a wake-up call for all Critical National Infrastructure”. A deconstruction of the TETRA:BURST attack that uses spoofed time on a “secure” network as an attack vector to reduce cryptographic algorithms to a minimum strength which are then trivially brute-force guessable in minutes using consumer hardware/software. TETRA is an ETSI-standardised trunked radio system for emergency services carrying voice/data and the cryptographic algorithms meant to secure all communications on the network are distributed under strict NDAs to authorised parties only. In 2023 Dutch security researchers Midnight Blue discovered 5 critical vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to fully decryption of all traffic on the network – secure voice comms, SMS/text-messages or SCADA data being just some examples. This talk will consider how spoofing time as an attack vector or using time as an analysis tools (e.g. cache-timing attacks) to reverse-engineer encryption schemes could affect other critical infrastructure sectors and suggest a range of mitigation strategies including system/network design and zero-trust philosophies.
WSTS 2025 brings together the leading corporate and government experts to shed light on the diverse and exciting innovation taking place in the field of synchronisation and timing. The event goes in-depth with insight from the field’s leading experts on evolving sync requirements, their rollout, and the impact of new sync systems and standards on industries and equipment manufacturers. Companies developing the leading timing and sync solutions are also present, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions of both vendors and presenters.
